We build local-first software. Your data stays on your device — we don't have accounts, we don't run analytics on your reading, and we don't sell anything about you.
This Privacy Policy explains how Upbrew Technologies ("Upbrew", "we", "us") handles information across this website (upbrew.tech) and our applications, including Neubook, our ebook reader for iOS and Android. By using our website or apps, you agree to this policy.
1.The short version
- We do not require an account or ask you to sign in.
- Your books, reading progress, highlights, notes, streaks, and settings are stored only on your device. We never upload them.
- We do not use advertising or third-party analytics/tracking SDKs.
- We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information.
- Some optional features connect to the internet to work — those requests, and what they share, are described below.
2.Information we collect
Data you create in the app
Books you import, your reading position, highlights, notes, bookmarks, reading statistics, streaks, and preferences are stored locally on your device using on-device storage. This information is not transmitted to Upbrew and we cannot access it. Deleting the app removes this data.
Information we do not collect
We do not collect your name, email, contacts, precise location, or a device advertising identifier, and we do not build a profile of you. Neubook contains no advertising and no third-party analytics or tracking frameworks.
3.Internet connections & third-party services
Neubook works fully offline for reading. Certain optional features make requests to third-party services, and only send what that feature needs. As with any internet request, the service you connect to will receive your device's IP address. We do not control those services; please review their own privacy policies.
- Word lookups — when you look up a word, it is sent to a public dictionary service (dictionaryapi.dev / Datamuse) to fetch a definition.
- Book discovery & search — when you search or browse in Discover, your query or the chosen category is sent to book catalog services (Google Books and Open Library) to return results and cover images.
- Article discovery & conversion — the "Articles" section loads public RSS feeds, and when you convert an article to a book, the app fetches that article's public web page so it can be read offline.
- Fonts — reading fonts may be fetched from Google Fonts.
- Bookstore links (affiliate) — when you tap a link to buy a book (e.g. on Kobo), your device's browser opens the store through an affiliate link (via Rakuten Advertising). The store and its affiliate network may set their own cookies, and Upbrew may earn a small commission on purchases at no extra cost to you. This does not send them any of your reading data.
No hidden collection. These connections happen only when you actively use the related feature. Neubook does not silently send data in the background, and none of these features transmit your library, notes, or reading activity to us.
4.Device permissions
- Storage / Files — to let you import your own EPUB files.
- Notifications — only if you enable reading reminders; scheduled locally on your device.
- Network — for the optional online features described above.
5.This website
The upbrew.tech website is a simple static site. It does not use tracking or advertising cookies. It stores a single preference in your browser's local storage — your light/dark theme choice — which never leaves your browser. If you email us, we receive whatever you choose to send.
6.Children
Neubook is rated for general audiences and does not knowingly collect any personal information from anyone, including children. Because we don't collect personal data, the app is safe for readers of all ages.
7.Data security & retention
Since your reading data lives only on your device, its security is tied to your device's own protections (passcode, encryption, OS sandboxing). We retain no personal data on our servers because we don't collect any. Any local counters the app keeps (for example, how many times a feature was used) stay on your device.
8.Your rights
Because we do not hold your personal data, there is nothing for us to export or delete on our side. You remain in full control: you can clear your data at any time from within the app or by uninstalling it. If you have questions about your rights under laws such as the GDPR or the DPDP Act, contact us and we'll help.
9.Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as our apps evolve. When we do, we'll revise the "Effective" date above and, for material changes, note it within the app or on this page. Continued use after an update means you accept the revised policy.
